Colombo

Für unsere letzten paar Tage in Sri Lanka sind wir wieder zu Gast in Petes Wohnung in Colombo und nutzen die Zeit, um die Sehenswürdigkeiten der Hauptstadt zu besichtigen.

Abgesehen vom Verkehr, den wir bereits in einem früheren Beitrag erwähnt haben, beeindruckt uns der Gangaramaya-Tempel, insbesondere das Viharaya oder Bilderhaus mit bunten Buddha-Statuen und anderen Figuren. Das Museum des Tempels zeigt eine große Anzahl und Vielfalt von Gegenständen, die von staatlichen und religiösen Vertretern sowie von Gläubigen als Spenden hinterlassen wurden - einige davon sind in unseren Augen ziemlich merkwürdig (siehe Fotos unten).

Nachdem wir stundenlang und mehrere Kilometer in brütender Hitze und hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit gelaufen sind, nehmen wir den Zug, um nach Hause zu fahren: Wir machen die echte Rushhour-Erfahrung - zum Glück nur für wenige Haltestellen. So enorm komprimiert waren wir selten bzw. noch nie, besonders Anne. Stef steht an einer etwas glücklicheren Stelle und hat sicher auch durch seine Statur Vorteile 😅.

Per i nostri ultimi giorni in Sri Lanka siamo di nuovo ospiti nell'appartamento di Pete a Colombo e ne approfittiamo per fare un giro nella capitale.

Oltre al traffico di cui abbiamo già parlato in un post precedente, siamo rimasti colpiti dal Tempio Gangaramaya, in particolare dal Viharaya o casa delle immagini con statue di Buddha e altre figure dai colori vivaci. Inoltre dal museo del tempio dove si può vedere un'enorme quantità e varietà di oggetti lasciati in dono dalle autorità e dai fedeli, alcuni dei quali sono piuttosto strani ai nostri occhi (vedi foto sotto).

Dopo aver camminato in un caldo soffocante e in una grande umidità per ore e diversi chilometri, prendiamo il treno per tornare a casa: facciamo la vera esperienza dell'ora di punta - per fortuna solo per poche fermate. Non siamo mai stati così compressi, soprattutto Anne. Ste si trova in una posizione un po' più fortunata ed è anche aiutato dalla sua stazza 😅.

For our last couple of days in Sri Lanka we are again guests in Pete's flat in Colombo and we use the time to do some sightseeing in the capital.

Other than the traffic we already mentioned in an earlier post, we are impressed by the Gangaramaya Temple, especially by the Viharaya or image house with brightly coloured Buddha statues and other figures. The temple's museum showcases a huge quantity and variety of objects left as donations by authorities and the faithful - some of which are rather odd to our eyes (see photos below).

After having walked in a sweltering heat and a great humidity for hours and several kilometers, we take the train to go back home: we make the real rush hour experience - luckily just for few stops. Never been so compressed, especially Anne. Stef happens to be in a slightly luckier position and is also helped by his size 😅
