anneste walkabout: Pom Pom: Wenn es Nacht wird // Quando cala la notte // When night comes

Zwei Tage vor unserer Abreise aus Pom Pom verabreden wir uns zu einem Nachttauchgang mit François und James, zwei der Jungs, die hier ihre DMT-(Divemaster-) Ausbildung machen. Es wird ein großartiger Tauchgang!

Es ist unglaublich, wie sich alles unter Wasser in der Nacht verändert. Unzählige Lebewesen werden im Schein der Taschenlampe sichtbar, Plankton in verschiedenen Größen trifft aus allen Richtungen auf die Haut, verschiedene Mikroorganismen nehmen eine fast außerirdische Qualität in ihrem Aussehen an. Die Geräusche sind anders. Abgesehen von unserem Atem ist alles still, mit leisen Geräuschen von Fischen und anderen Tieren hier und da.

Und es kommen Lebewesen zum Vorschein, die sich normalerweise tagsüber eher verstecken, wie Krebse, Mollusken und andere, die uns ein wirklich fantastisches Schauspiel bieten. Dieses Mal hatten wir zudem das Glück (d.h. François und James waren großartige Spotter), unter anderem einen Bobtail-Tintenfisch und verschiedene Garnelen zu sehen, sowie die wunderschöne blaue Black Velvet Headshield Slug, die Anne besonders liebt und die sie auch selbst wiedergefunden hat. So cool!!! Aber genug der Worte, hier ein paar Bilder und Videos. Die Qualität ist noch verbesserungswürdig, da es nicht ganz einfach ist, die Taschenlampe und die GoPro gleichzeitig zu bedienen, Schatten zu vermeiden und den Fokus an der richtigen Stelle zu halten (und die GoPro ist nicht die beste Unterwasserkamera, um ehrlich zu sein). Stef's Ehrgeiz ist geweckt! 😉😎

Due giorni prima della partenza da Pom Pom organizziamo un'immersione notturna con François e James, due dei ragazzi che stanno facendo qui il loro DMT (divemaster training). Alla fine sarà un'immersione eccezionale!

È davvero incredibile come tutto cambia sott'acqua durante la notte. Innumerevoli creature diventano visibili nel fascio della torcia, plancton di diverse dimensioni ti tocca la pelle da ogni direzione, le forme dei vari microrganismi assumono una qualità quasi extraterrestre. I rumori sono diversi. A parte il nostro respiro, è tutto silenzioso, con qualche leggero rumore di pesci e altri animali.

Ed è anche il momento in cui escono le creature che normalmente tendono a nascondersi durante il giorno: granchi, molluschi e altre bestie si mostrano creando uno spettacolo davvero fantastico. Questa volta siamo davvero molto fortunati (cioè, François e James sono stati ottimi spotter) e vediamo, tra gli altri, un bobtail squid e vari gamberetti, oltre alla bellissima Black Velvet Headshield Slug, che Anne adora e che ha trovato personalmente. Che bello!!! Ma basta con le parole, ecco alcune foto e video. La qualità deve essere migliorata: non è facile gestire la torcia e la GoPro allo stesso tempo, evitando le ombre e mantenendo la messa a fuoco al posto giusto (e la GoPro non è la migliore macchina subacquea, a dire il vero), ma Ste continuerà a lavorarci. 😉😎

Two days before leaving Pom Pom we arrange to go for a night dive with François and James, two of the guys who are making their DMT (divemaster training) here. It turns out to be a great, great dive!

It is really incredible how everything changes underwater during the night. Uncountable creatures become visible in the beam of the torch, plankton of different sizes can be felt hitting your skin from every direction, the shapes of the various microorganisms assume an almost extraterrestrial quality. The noises are different. Other then our breathing it is all silent, with some light noises from fish and other animals.

And that's also when creatures come out that are normally hiding during the day, crabs, molluscs and others are showing themselves creating a really fantastic show. This time we were very lucky (i.e. François and James were great spotters) to see, among others, a bobtail squid and various shrimps, as well as the beautiful blue velvet headshield slug - which Anne loves and she spotted, too. So cool!!! But enough of words, here are some pics and vids. The quality needs much improvement, as it's not the easiest to manage the torch and the GoPro at the same time, avoiding shadows and keeping the focus in the right place (and the GoPro is actually not the best underwater camera, to be honest), but Stef will keep working on it. 😉😎

Stef trägt eine Crown of Thorns, die am Ende des Tauchgangs von unserer Meeresbiologin außerhalb des Wassers getötet wird, damit der Seestern die noch jungen Korallen nicht zerstört. // Stef porta una Crown of Thorns, che verrà uccisa fuori dall'acqua dalla nostra biologa marina alla fine dell'immersione per evitare che la stella marina distrugga i giovani coralli. // Stef carries a Crown of Thorns, which is killed out of the water by our marine biologist at the end of the dive to prevent the starfish from destroying the young corals.
