Kuala Lumpur: Die verschwundene 4 // Il 4 sparito // The 4 disappeared

Planänderung: aus den Philippinen wird nichts bzw. wir vertagen eine Reise dahin auf irgendwann in der Zukunft. Stattdessen sind wir in Kuala Lumpur, auch KL genannt (das erste und bisher letzte Mal waren wir 2006 in der Stadt - Aufenthalte am Flughafen zählen nicht.). Vom Balkon unseres Einzimmerappartements im Stockwerk 33A haben wir eine Megaaussicht! Und weil die zu verschiedenen Tages- und Nachtzeiten immer anders beeindruckend ist, folgt unten eine Fotoreihe. 

Cambio di programma: le Filippine non si faranno e sono rimandate a un viaggio futuro. Siamo invece a Kuala Lumpur, nota anche come KL (la prima e finora unica volta che ci siamo stati è stata nel 2006 - i passaggi in aeroporto non contano). Dal balcone del nostro monolocale al piano 33A, abbiamo una vista super! E poiché la vista è sempre diversa a seconda dell'ora del giorno e della notte, di seguito una serie di foto.

Change of plans: nothing doing with the Philippines and we postpone a trip there until sometime in the future. Instead, we are in Kuala Lumpur, also known as KL (the first and so far last time we were in the city was in 2006 - stays at the airport don't count). From the balcony of our studio flat on floor 33A, we have a mega view! And because the view is always differently impressive at different times of day and night, a series of photos follows below.

Stockwerk 33A? Es gibt auch 23A und 13A; die Stockwerke 14, 24 und 34 hingegen gibt es nicht. Irgendwas ist also mit der Zahl 4 los und Stef erinnert sich dunkel, dass die 4 in der chinesischen und chinesisch-beeinflussten Kultur mit Unheil verbunden ist. Und so ist es: die Aussprache des Worts für die Zahl 4 auf chinesisch hat Ähnlichkeit mit der für "Tod" und deshalb wird es oft auch aus alltäglichen Situationen und Anwendungen verbannt, wie hier bei den Stockwerken. Das sieht man schön und (für uns) etwas verwirrend zugleich im Aufzug.

Piano 33A? Ci sono anche il 23A e il 13A, ma non ci sono i piani 14, 24 e 34. Quindi c'è qualcosa che riguarda il numero 4 e Ste ricorda vagamente che nella cultura cinese e in quelle con influenze cinesi, il numero 4 è associato alla cattiva sorte. E così è: la pronuncia della parola per il numero 4 in cinese è simile a quella per "morte" ed è per questo che è spesso bandito da situazioni e applicazioni quotidiane, come in questo caso con i piani. Lo si vede bene e (per noi) allo stesso tempo in modo un po' confuso nell'ascensore.

Floor 33A? There are also 23A and 13A, but there are no floors 14, 24 and 34. So something is going on with the number 4 and Stef remembers vaguely that in Chinese and Chinese-influenced culture, the number 4 is associated with bad luck. And so it is: the pronunciation of the word for the number 4 in Chinese is similar to that for "death" and that is why it is often banned from everyday situations and applications, as here with the floors. You can see this easily and (for us) somewhat confusingly at the same time in the lift.

In KL nutzen wir die in der Wohnung frei zur Verfügung stehende Waschmaschine ausgiebig, trocknen unsere noch immer von Pom Pom feuchten Tauchsachen, kümmern uns um Stefs kaputte Rucksackschnallen und lassen es ansonsten entspannt angehen. Außerdem lässt Stef seine in Semporna vom Friseur vermurksten Haare wieder in eine ansehnliche Form bringen. Anne trinkt wann immer möglich ihr malaysisches Lieblingsgetränk Teh Tarik (wörtlich "gezogener Tee"): im Prinzip Tee wird stärker Schwarztee mit süßer Kondensmilch gemischt und von einer Tasse in eine zweite und wieder zurück "gezogen", bis obenauf ein luftiger, schöner Schaum entsteht. Gibt es heiß oder auf Eis. Köstlich! 🤩 Frühstück mit diversen Roti und Nasi Lemak. Stef ißt Mee Goreng bis zum Abwinken - und hat trotzdem nicht genug davon. 😆

A KL, facciamo largo uso della lavatrice nell'appartamento, mettiamo ad asciugare la nostra attrezzatura da immersioni che è ancora umida da Pom Pom, ci occupiamo delle fibbie rotte dello zaino rotte di Ste (con un accrocchio da cambiare al rientro a casa) e per il resto ce la prendiamo comoda. Ste riesce anche a farsi rimettere in sesto i suoi capelli, rovinati dal parrucchiere di Semporna. Anne beve la sua bevanda malese preferita, il Teh Tarik (letteralmente "tè tirato"), ogni volta che è possibile: di base, un tè forte viene mescolato con latte condensato dolce e "tirato", cioè versato ripetutamente da una tazza all'altra fino a quando non si forma una bella schiuma ariosa. Si serve caldo o con ghiaccio. Delizioso! 🤩 Colazione con vari roti e nasi lemak. Ste mangia mee goreng a volontà e non ne ha mai abbastanza. 😆

In KL, we make extensive use of the washing machine in the flat, dry our still wet dive gear from Pom Pom, take care of Stef's broken rucksack buckles and otherwise take it easy. Stef also gets his hair, which was messed up by the hairdresser in Semporna, back into a respectable shape. Anne drinks her favourite Malaysian drink Teh Tarik (literally "pulled tea") whenever possible: in principle, strong black tea is mixed with sweet condensed milk and "pulled" from one cup to another and back again until a nice, airy foam forms on top. Served hot or on ice. Delicious! 🤩 Breakfast with various roti and nasi lemak. Stef eats mee goreng to the hilt - and still can't get enough of it. 😆

Das Viertel mit "unserem" Nasi-Lemak-Restaurant besteht aus lauter kleinen, wahrscheinlich noch alten, ursprünglichen Häusern und wird direkt von den Hochhäusern bedrängt. // Tutte le case nel quartiere dove si trova il "nostro" ristorante Nasi Lemak sono piccole, probabilmente ancora vecchie, originarie; completamente circondate dai grattacieli. // The neighbourhood of "our" Nasi Lemak restaurant consists of small houses, which are probably all still from former times; directly pressing in on them, the skyscrapers.

Ganz spontan geht es an einem Vormittag etwas außerhalb der Stadt zu den Batu Caves. 270 bunte Stufen steigen wir zu den in den Höhlen befindlichen Hindutempeln hinauf und wieder hinunter. Sehr beeindruckend und spannend! Bei den Petronas Towers schauen wir auch wieder vorbei; sie scheinen uns deutlich weniger hoch und überragend wie vor 17 Jahren. Wahrscheinlich standen damals auch noch weniger Hochhäuser drum herum; so genau erinnern wir uns nicht mehr. 

Una mattina andiamo alle Batu Caves, appena fuori città. Saliamo 270 gradini colorati fino ai templi indù nelle grotte e poi torniamo giù. Davvero impressionante e interessante! Ci fermiamo di nuovo alle Petronas Towers, che sembrano molto meno alte e imponenti di 17 anni fa. Probabilmente all'epoca c'erano anche meno grattacieli intorno a loro. Non ricordiamo esattamente.

We spontaneously head to the Batu Caves just outside the city one morning. We climb 270 colourful steps up to the Hindu temples in the caves and back down again. Very impressive and exciting! We also stop by the Petronas Towers again; they seem much less tall and towering than they did 17 years ago. There were probably even fewer skyscrapers around them back then; we don't remember exactly.

Deepavali / Diwali: Der größte und wichtigste Feiertag des Jahres für Hindus. Das Fest hat seinen Namen von der Reihe (avali) von Tonlampen (deepa), die Inder vor ihren Häusern anzünden. Sie symbolisieren das innere Licht, das vor geistiger Dunkelheit schützt. // È la festa più grande e importante dell'anno per gli indù. La festa prende il nome dalla fila (avali) di lampade di argilla (deepa) che accendono fuori dalle loro case per simboleggiare la luce interiore che protegge dall'oscurità spirituale. // The biggest and most important holiday of the year for Hindus. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.

Manche Gläubige hatten ihre kahlen Köpfe mit (wir nehmen an) Tonfarbe bemalt oder bemalen lassen. // Alcuni dei credenti avevano dipinto o fatto dipingere le loro teste calve con (presumiamo) argilla. // Some believers painted or had their bald heads painted with (we assume) clay paint.
