Fremde Kultur und Geschichte kennenlernen, verschiedene Lebensweisen, Denkweisen und Themen erfahren, die für die Gesellschaft eines Landes relevant sind, gehören sicherlich zu unseren Hauptzielen auf dieser Reise. Anne wählt also für jedes Land mindestens ein Buch (möglichst Belletristik) aus, das in der Region spielt und von einem einheimischen Autor geschrieben wurde, und liest es während wir vor Ort sind. (Stef hat auch das ein oder andere der nachfolgenden Bücher gelesen. Einige Themen und Stile waren allerdings nicht so sein Ding, und deshalb ist es Annes Leseliste. 😎)

Es ist ein ganz anderes Leseerlebnis, wenn der Schauplatz des Buches mit dem übereinstimmt, was wir tagsüber sehen. Manchmal werden ein paar unserer Fragen beantwortet, manchmal hören wir genau die Geräusche oder können die Gefühle nachempfinden, die in den Geschichten beschrieben werden. Manchmal lenkt eine Erzählung unseren Blick auf ein Detail, das wir vielleicht ohne übersehen hätten, oder sie führt uns an einen Ort, den wir sonst nicht besucht hätten. Das ist wirklich lohnend, macht Spaß, ist interessant und vor allem eine Bereicherung für unsere Reisen! 🤩🤩🤩

Conoscere la cultura e la storia di un paese straniero, scoprire i diversi modi di vivere, le correnti di pensiero e gli argomenti che sono rilevanti per la società di un paese sono sicuramente tra i nostri obiettivi principali di questo viaggio. Per ogni Paese Anne sceglie almeno un libro (possibilmente di narrativa) ambientato nella regione e scritto da un autore locale e lo legge durante il viaggio. (Anche Ste ha letto alcuni di questi libri. Alcuni argomenti e stili non erano di suo gusto e li ha evitati, quindi la lista di lettura è di Anne. 😎)

Quando l'ambientazione del libro corrisponde a ciò che vediamo durante il giorno, l'esperienza di lettura è completamente diversa. A volte alcune delle nostre domande ricevono una risposta, a volte sentiamo esattamente i suoni o le sensazioni che sono state descritte nelle storie. A volte una narrazione guida i nostri occhi verso un dettaglio che ci sarebbe potuto sfuggire o ci indirizza verso un luogo che altrimenti non avremmo visitato. È davvero gratificante, divertente, interessante e soprattutto arricchisce i nostri viaggi! 🤩🤩🤩

Getting to know a foreign culture and history, finding out about different ways of life, train's of thought and topics, that are relevant to the society of a country are surely among our main objectives for this journey. So for each country Anne picks at least one book (possibly fiction) set in the region and written by a local author and reads it while on the road. (Stef read some of the books, too. Some topics and styles weren't his cup of tea though and hence it's Anne's reading list. 😎)

It makes for a completely different reading experience, when the setting of the book matches with what we see during the day. Sometimes a few of our questions get an answer, sometimes we hear exactly the sounds or feel the feelings which have been described in the stories. Sometimes a narrative guides our eyes to a detail we might have missed out on or it directs us to a place, which we wouldn't have visited otherwise. It's really rewarding, fun, interesting and especially enriches our travels! 🤩🤩🤩

SRI LANKA

"You're invited", Amanda Jayatissa

Thema: Ein Psychothriller, der in der High Society von Colombo spielt. Amayas ehemalige beste Freundin wird deren Ex-Freund heiraten und lädt Amaya nach jahrelanger Funkstille zu ihrer Hochzeitsparty ein. Oder hat sie sie gar nicht eingeladen?

Wert für unsere Reise: Unglaublich aber wahr, in der ersten Hälfte des Buchs wird von allen möglichen Straßen der Hauptstadt die kleine Straße erwähnt, in der die Wohnung unseres Freundes Pete liegt und in der wir in Colombo wohnten!

Argomento: Un thriller psicologico ambientato nell'alta società di Colombo. L'ex migliore amica di Amaya sta per sposare il suo ex fidanzato e, dopo anni e anni di silenzio, invita Amaya alla sua festa di nozze. O forse non l'ha invitata?

Valore per il nostro viaggio: Incredibile ma vero, nella prima metà del libro, la stradina dell'appartamento del nostro amico Pete in cui abbiamo alloggiato a Colombo viene citata tra tutte le strade possibili della capitale!

Topic: A psychological thriller set in the high society of Colombo. Amaya's ex-best friend is going to marry her ex-boyfriend and - after years and years of silence - invites Amaya to her wedding party. Or didn't she?

Value to our journey: Incredible but true, in the first half of the book, the small street of our friend Pete's apartment where we stayed in in Colombo is mentioned out of all possible streets in the capital!

"The Village in the Jungle", Leonard Woolf

Thema: Der Roman spielt während der Kolonialherrschaft der Briten in Ceylon und beschreibt das Leben einer armen Familie - hauptsächlich des Bauern Silindu und seiner beiden Töchter Punchi Menika und Hinnihami - in einem kleinen Dorf namens Beddegama, wörtlich "Das Dorf im Dschungel". Sie kämpfen mit Armut, Krankheit, Aberglauben, dem Kolonialsystem, den Dorfbewohnern und dem Dschungel selbst. Nachdem er von den Dorfbehörden (einer von ihnen stirbt) und einem Schuldeneintreiber hintergangen wurde, wird Silindu wegen Mordes vor Gericht gestellt.

Wert für unsere Reise: Ein wenig historischer Input gemischt mit einem starken Fokus auf die Bedeutung und die Auswirkungen des Dschungels als Lebensumgebung auf die Landbevölkerung und deren Überlebenskampf. Der Aberglaube taucht als Thema auf. Dies wird, zusammen mit dem Glauben an Geister und Gespenster, wie wir später herausfinden werden, ein oft wiederkehrender Aspekt in Büchern aus dem asiatischen Raum sein.

Argomento: Ambientato durante il dominio coloniale degli inglesi a Ceylon, il romanzo descrive la vita di una famiglia povera - principalmente del contadino Silindu e delle sue due figlie Punchi Menika e Hinnihami - in un piccolo villaggio chiamato Beddegama, letteralmente "Il villaggio nella giungla". Lottano contro la povertà, le malattie, la superstizione, il sistema coloniale, la gente del villaggio e la giungla stessa. Dopo essere stato manipolato dalle autorità del villaggio (uno di loro muore) e da un esattore, Silindu viene processato per omicidio.

Valore per il nostro viaggio: Un piccolo contributo storico mescolato con una forte attenzione all'importanza e all'effetto dell'ambiente della giungla sulla popolazione rurale e sulla sua lotta per la sopravvivenza. La superstizione emerge come tema. Questo sarà, insieme alla credenza negli spiriti e nei fantasmi, come scopriremo più avanti, un aspetto ricorrente nei libri della regione asiatica.

Topic: Set during the colonial rule of the British in Ceylon, the novel describes the life of a poor family - mainly of the farmer Silindu and his two daughters Punchi Menika and Hinnihami - in a small village called Beddegama, literally "The village in the jungle". They struggle with poverty, disease, superstition, the unsympathetic colonial system, the village people and the jungle itself. After being manipulated by the village authorities (one of them dies) and a debt collector, Silindu is put on trial for murder.

Value to our journey: A little historical input mixed with a strong focus on the importance and effect of a jungle environment on the rural population and it's fight for survival. Superstition emerges as a topic. This is going to be, together with the belief in spirits and ghosts, as we'll find out later, a recurring aspect in books from the Asian region.

"La storia di Buddha", Édouard Schuré

Thema: Eine kurze Erzählung der Lebensgeschichte Buddhas, von dessen Ursprüngen bis zu dessen Tod.

Wert für unsere Reise: Eine schnelle Gedächtnisauffrischung und eine Zusammenfassung, um besser zu verstehen, woher der Buddhismus kommt. Dies war ein Buch (auf Italienisch), das Anne bereits auf ihrem Kindle hatte und passenderweise wiederentdeckte, als wir durch die Tempel in Sri Lanka tourten.

Argomento: Un breve racconto della vita del Buddha, dalle origini alla morte.

Valore per il nostro viaggio: Un rapido rinfresco per la memoria e un riassunto per capire meglio da dove viene il buddismo. Si tratta di un libro (in italiano) che Anne aveva già sul suo Kindle e che ha riscoperto proprio mentre eravamo in giro per i templi dello Sri Lanka.

Topic: A brief narration of the life story of Buddha, from his origins to his death.

Value to our journey: A quick refresh for the memory and summary to better understand where Buddhism comes from. This was a book (in Italian), which Anne had already on her Kindle and rediscovered just while we were touring through temples in Sri Lanka.

INDIEN - INDIA

"The World we found", Thrity Umrigar

Thema: Eine Geschichte über vier indische Frauen und ihre unauslöschliche Freundschaft über geografische Entfernungen, unterschiedliche Leben und Religionen hinweg. Als eine von ihnen, die in den USA lebt, erfährt, dass sie unheilbar krank ist, äußert sie den Wunsch, alle vier noch einmal vereint zu haben. Kein leichtes Unterfangen, zumal der Kontakt zur vierten Freundin neu geknüpft werden muss.

Wert für unsere Reise: Super interessantes Buch über die vergangenen und immer noch bestehenden Spannungen zwischen Hindus und Muslimen im heutigen Indien, das einen Einblick in die verletzten Gefühle, den Hass und die Gedanken auf beiden Seiten gibt.

Argomento: La storia di quattro donne indiane e della loro indelebile amicizia attraverso la distanza geografica, le vite e le religioni diverse. Quando una di loro, che vive negli Stati Uniti, scopre di soffrire di una malatia terminale, esprime il desiderio di vederle ancora una volta tutte e quattro unite. Non è un'impresa facile, soprattutto perché il contatto con la quarta amica deve essere ristabilito.

Valore per il nostro viaggio: Libro interessantissimo sulle tensioni passate e ancora esistenti tra indù e musulmani nell'India di oggi, che offre uno sguardo sui sentimenti feriti, sull'odio e sui pensieri di entrambe le parti.

Topic: A story about four Indian women and their indelible friendship across geographic distance, different lives and religions. When one of them, living in the US, discovers she's terminally, she expresses the wish to see all four of them united once more. This is not an easy undertaking, especially as the contact to the fourth friend has to be established anew.

Value to our journey: Super interesting book about the past and still existing tensions between Hindus and Muslims in nowadays India, providing a glimpse into the hurt feelings, hate and thoughts on both sides.

"The Caves of Steel", Isaac Asimov

Wert für unsere Reise: Dieses Buch hat natürlich nichts mit Indien zu tun, aber es löste ein Gespräch mit Stef über ein anderes Buch von Asimov aus, in dem den Regionen der Welt bestimmte Aufgaben/Charakteristika zugewiesen werden, d. h. Europa mit Kunst, Literatur usw. und Asien mit der Produktion. Dies war ein interessanter Aspekt, da wir den Willen Indiens und das Bestreben und den Anspruch der Bevölkerung erlebten, zunehmend ein wichtiger Akteur in der Weltpolitik und -wirtschaft zu werden.

Valore per il nostro viaggio: È chiaro che questo libro non ha nulla a che fare con l'India, ma ha suscitato un discorso con Ste su un altro libro di Asimov, in cui alle regioni del mondo vengono assegnati compiti/caratteristiche specifiche, ad esempio all'Europa le arti, la letteratura ecc. e all'Asia la produzione. Questo aspetto è stato interessante perché abbiamo notato la volontà e la richiesta dell'India e della sua popolazione di diventare sempre più un attore importante nella politica e nell'economia mondiale.

Value to our journey: Clearly, this book has nothing to do with India, but it sparked a talk with Stef about another book by Asimov, where the regions of the world were assigned specific tasks/characteristics, i.e. Europe with the arts, literature etc. and Asia with production. This was an interesting aspect as we noticed India's will and the population's strive to increasingly become a major player in world politics and economics. 

TAIWAN

"Two trees make a forest", Jessica J. Lee

Thema: Die Reise der Autorin auf der Suche nach ihrer Identität als in Deutschland lebende Kanadierin und Taiwanesin und nach der Geschichte ihrer Familie in Taiwan. Geschichte, Kultur und Natur sind eng miteinander verwoben.

Wert für unsere Reise: Ein Blick auf und Aspekt der allgegenwärtigen Herausforderung für viele Taiwaner, ihre Identität zu definieren und meist mehrere Identitäten, Sprachen und Kulturen unter einen Hut bringen zu müssen. Ein weiterer guter Überblick über die Geschichte und die verschiedenen Mächte, die Taiwan oder die Republik China (ROC) regierten. Außerdem beantwortete das Buch Annes Frage nach dem Namen und den Früchten eines Baumes, der ihr in den Städten und auf dem Land oft aufgefallen ist.

Argomento: Il viaggio dell'autrice alla scoperta della sua identità di canadese-taiwanese che vive in Germania e della storia della sua famiglia a Taiwan. Storia, cultura e natura sono strettamente intrecciate.

Valore per il nostro viaggio: Un altro sguardo sulla sfida sempre attuale per molti taiwanesi di definire la propria identità e, il più delle volte, di dover conciliare identità, lingue e culture multiple. Un'ulteriore buona panoramica della storia e dei vari poteri che hanno governato Taiwan o la Repubblica di Cina (ROC). Inoltre, il libro ha risposto alla domanda di Anne sul nome e sui frutti di un albero, che aveva notato spesso nelle città e nelle zone rurali.

Topic: The author's journey to find out about her identity as a Canadian-Taiwanese living in Germany and about the story of her family in Taiwan. History, culture and nature are closely intertwined.

Value to our journey: Another look and aspect on the ever present challenge for many Taiwanese people to define their identity and, most of the times, needing to reconcile multiple identities, languages and cultures. An additional good overview of history and the various powers which ruled Taiwan or the Republic of China (ROC). Besides, the book answered Anne's question about the name and fruits of a tree, which she had noticed often in towns and in rural areas.

"Whisper", Yu-Ko Chang

Thema: Eine taiwanesische Geister- und Gruselgeschichte, die lokale Folklore mit Aberglauben, der japanischen Besetzung des Landes und der langjährigen Misshandlung der Ureinwohner Taiwans zu einer (manchmal verwirrenden) Geschichte verbindet. Can Wu Shih-Sheng, ein heruntergekommener Taxifahrer in Taipeh, macht sich auf die Suche nach der Quelle der Stimme, die seine Frau getötet hat; er könnte das nächstes Opfer sein.

Wert für unsere Reise: Der japanische Einfluss in vielen Bereichen des Lebens in Taiwan ist uns auf unserer Reise sehr aufgefallen und spielt auch in diesem Buch eine große Rolle. Eine ganz anderes Verständnis von Geistern und Gespenstern, ihren Kräften und Mittel gegen sie, als wir es im Westen gewohnt sind.

Argomento: Una storia di fantasmi e di orrore taiwanese, che combina il folklore locale con la superstizione, l'occupazione giapponese del paese e il maltrattamento a lungo termine degli aborigeni di Taiwan in una storia a volte confusionaria. Can Wu Shih-Sheng, un tassista malandato di Taipei, dà la caccia alla fonte della voce che ha ucciso sua moglie; potrebbe essere lui la prossima vittima.

Valore per il nostro viaggio: L'influenza giapponese in molte aree della vita a Taiwan è stata molto evidente durante il nostro viaggio e anche in questo libro gioca un ruolo importante. Una visione molto diversa degli spiriti e dei fantasmi, dei loro poteri e dei rimedi contro di essi, rispetto a quella a cui siamo abituati in Occidente.

Topic: A Taiwanese ghost and horror story, which combines local folklore with superstition, the Japanese occupation of the country and the long-term mistreatment of Taiwan’s aboriginal people in a sometimes confusing story. Can Wu Shih-Sheng, a degenerate taxi driver in Taipei, hunts down the source of the voice that killed his wife; he might be it's next victim.

Value to our journey: The Japanese influence in many areas of life in Taiwan was very noticeable to us while traveling and also in this book, it plays a major role. A very different take on spirits and ghosts, their powers and remedies against them, than what we are used to in the west.

BORNEO - MALAYSIA

"Into the Heart of Borneo", Redmond O'Hanlon

Thema: Ein eher ungewöhnlicher Bericht - britischer Humor und Exzentrik... - über eine Reise in die Mitte Borneos, die der Naturforscher Redmond O'Hanlon, der Dichter James Fenton und drei einheimische Guides 1983 unternahmen. Diese Reiseriute war seit den frühen 1920er Jahren nicht mehr unternommen worden, und die Gruppe kämpft mit dem Unbekannten, den Herausforderungen des Dschungels und des Flusses, den sie befahren, und lacht über ihre jeweiligen unterschiedlichen kulturellen Hintergründe, Gewohnheiten und individuellen Eigenheiten. Interessant und urkomisch!

Wert für unsere Reise: Der Dschungel in Worten und Erlebnissen beschrieben, die wir sehr gut nachempfinden können - auch wenn unsere Reise zum Glück etwas anders verlief als die des Autors. Seine Beschreibung der nächtlichen Dschungelgeräusche ist so treffend und witzig!

Argomento: Un racconto piuttosto insolito, resoconto - pieno di umorismo ed eccentricità britannica... - di un viaggio nel centro del Borneo compiuto nel 1983 dal naturalista Redmond O'Hanlon, dal poeta James Fenton e da tre guide indigene. Il viaggio non era più stato tentato dall'inizio degli anni Venti e il gruppo si confronta con l'ignoto, le sfide della giungla e del fiume che navigano e si fanno quattro risate sui loro diversi background culturali, le abitudini e le peculiarità individuali. Interessante e divertente!

Valore per il nostro viaggio: La giungla descritta con parole ed esperienze in cui ci ritroviamo - anche se, per fortuna, il nostro viaggio è stato un po' diverso da quello intrapreso dall'autore. La sua descrizione dei suoni della giungla di notte è davvero accurata e divertente!

Topic: A rather unusual - British humour and eccentricity... - account of a journey to the center of Borneo by naturalist Redmond O'Hanlon, poet James Fenton, and three native guides in 1983. The journey had not been attempted anymore since the early 1920s and the group struggles with the unknown, the challenges of the jungle and the river they navigate and have a good laugh about their different cultural backgrounds, habits and individual peculiarities. Interesting and hilarious!

Value to our journey: The jungle described in words and experiences, which we could relate to very much - although, luckily our journey was somewhat different to the one undertaken by the author. His description of the jungle sounds at night is so accurate and funny!

"The Garden of Evening Mists", Tan Twan Eng

Thema: Yun Ling ist die einzige Überlebende eines japanischen Gefangenenlagers Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs; ihre Schwester hat nicht überlebt. Als Richterin betreut Yun Ling Fälle von Kriegsverbrechern in der Hoffnung, herauszufinden, wo das Lager lag, in dem sie inhaftiert war. Unmittelbar nach dem Krieg beginnt sie jedoch eine unerwartete Lehre bei einem japanischen Gärtner in den Cameron Highlands, um die Kunst der Gestaltung eines japanischen Gartens für ihre Schwester zu erlernen, die eine Leidenschaft dafür hegte.

Wert für unsere Reise: Geschichte, Geschichte, Geschichte und das Lesen über die Herausforderungen, ein Leben nach den erlebten japanischen Gräueltaten zu führen, die ihr Leben auch nach dem Krieg noch beeinflussen. Japanische und malaysische Geschichte und Schicksale sind miteinander verwoben.

Argomento: Yun Ling è l'unica sopravvissuta di un campo di prigionia giapponese alla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale; sua sorella non ce l'ha fatta. Come giudice si occupa di casi di criminali di guerra, sperando sempre di scoprire dove si trovava il campo in cui è stata imprigionata. Subito dopo la guerra, però, inizia un improbabile apprendistato presso un giardiniere giapponese nelle Cameron Highlands per imparare l'arte di progettare un giardino giapponese per la sorella, che ne era appassionata.

Valore per il nostro viaggio: Storia, storia, storia e lettura delle sfide di condurre una vita dopo le atrocità subite da parte dei giapponesi, che continuano a influenzare la vita anche dopo la fine della guerra. Storia e destini giapponesi e malesi intrecciati.

Topic: Yun Ling is the only survivor of a Japanese prisoners camp at the end of WW2; her sister didn't survive. As a judge she oversees war criminals cases, always hoping to find out where the camp she was imprisoned in was. Straight after the war though, she starts an improbable apprenticeship at a Japanese gardener in the Cameron Highlands to learn the art of designing a Japanese garden for her sister, who was passionate about it.

Value to our journey: History, history, history and reading about the challenges of leading a life after the atrocities that the protagonist suffered and which still continue influencing life after the war was over. Japanese and Malay history and fates intertwined.

THAILAND - THAILANDIA

"The blind Earthworm in the Labyrinth", Veeraporn Nitiprapha

Thema: Geschichte der Schwestern Chalika und Chareeya und deren Freundschaft mit Pran, der wie sie ein Waisenkind ist und in einer Familie aufwuchs, in der Schweigen und Einsamkeit den Alltag beherrschten. Gleichzeitig ist es ein Buch über eine seltsame Art von Freundschaft und die Schwierigkeiten, mit anderen zu kommunizieren.

Wert für unsere Reise: Wir sahen uns das große Wandgemälde an, das die Wände der Gebetshalle in Wat Suthat in Bangkok bedeckt.

Argomento: Storia delle sorelle Chalika e Chareeya e della loro amicizia con Pran, che, come loro, è orfano ed è stato cresciuto in una famiglia in cui il silenzio e la solitudine dominavano la vita quotidiana. Allo stesso tempo, un libro su uno strano tipo di amicizia e sulle difficoltà di comunicare con gli altri.

Valore per il nostro viaggio: Ci ha fatto scoprire il grande murale che ricopre le pareti della sala di preghiera di Wat Suthat a Bangkok.

Topic: Story about the sisters Chalika and Chareeya and their friendship with Pran, who, like them, is an orphan and grew up in a family in which silence and loneliness dominated everyday life. At the same time a book about a weird kind of friendship and the difficulties to communicate with others.

Value to our journey: Made us check out the big mural covering the walls of the prayer hall of Wat Suthat in Bangkok.

"Robinson Crusoe", Daniel Defoe

Wert für unsere Reise (reading still in progress): Obwohl das Buch nicht in Thailand, sondern auf der anderen Seite der Welt in der Karibik spielt, gefällt es Anne als Reise- und vor allem als Abenteuergeschichte sehr gut und passt damit einfach insgesamt rein.

Valore per il nostro viaggio (reading still in progress): Anche se non è ambientato in Thailandia, ma dall'altra parte del mondo, nei Caraibi, il fatto che sia una storia di viaggio e in particolare di avventura ha attirato Anne e l'ha resa adatta al momento.

Value to our journey (reading still in progress): Although not being set in Thailand, but on the other side of the world in the Caribbeans, it being a travel and particularly adventure story appealed to Anne and made it a fitting point in time.

Hua Hin: Thailändischer Wein & Käse // Vini e formaggi thai // Thai wine & cheese

Wir mögen Wein. Wir lieben Wein! Eigentlich planen wir, nach Südamerika zu reisen, um guten Wein zu trinken. Wir hätten nie erwartet, dass wir schon in Thailand fündig würden. 🤯😂

Auf der Suche nach einem interessanten Ausflugsziel im Anschluss an Bangkok stößt Anne auf die Website eines Weinguts, das zwischen Hua Hin und der Grenze zu Myanmar in Zentralthailand liegt. Es sieht interessant aus, hat gute Kritiken und wir sind angefixt

Wir besorgen uns Tickets für einen Minivan nach Hua Hin, weil wir hoffen, dass es so einfacher und bequemer sein würde als per Zug. Es ist auf jeden Fall einfacher, weil wir direkt nahe unserer Unterkunft einsteigen können, aber was Bequemlichkeit während der Fahrt angeht... Stefs Rücken ist da ganz anderer Meinung! Wie auch immer, wir erreichen unser Ziel, und das ist letztlich das Wichtigste. 😁

Hua Hin ist eine Küstenstadt, die ganz auf Tourismus ausgerichtet ist. Die Straßen im strandnahen Teil der Stadt sind voller Massagesalons, Bars und Restaurants, von denen viele westliches Essen anbieten - wer ernsthaft in Thailand einen Sonntagsbraten essen will, übersteigt unsere Vorstellungskraft, aber egal. Und dieselben Straßen sind auch voller Touristen, viele von ihnen weiße Männer mittleren bis höheren Alters, die Hand in Hand mit jungen Thaimädchen spazieren gehen... sicherlich gibt es hier viel Liebe... 🤔 🤨 🤢 🤮 Abgesehen davon bekommen wir gutes Essen und vor allem Annes Lieblingsdessert, Mango Sticky Rice. 😃🤤 🤤

Ci piace il vino. Amiamo il vino. Abbiamo in programma di andare in Sud America per bere del buon vino. Non ci saremmo mai aspettati di farlo già in Thailandia. 🤯😂

Mentre cercava una destinazione interessante da visitare dopo Bangkok, Anne capita sul sito web di un'azienda vinicola situata tra Hua Hin e il confine con Myanmar, nella Thailandia centrale. Sembra interessante, ha buone recensioni e prontamente decidiamo di andarci.

Prendiamo i biglietti per un minivan per Hua Hin, pensando che sarà più facile e comodo del treno. È sicuramente più facile, ma la schiena di Ste potrebbe non essere d'accordo sul fatto che sia più comodo... Comunque, raggiungiamo la nostra destinazione, e questo è ciò che conta. 😁

Hua Hin è una città costiera, orientata al turismo. Le strade della parte della città che va verso la spiaggia sono fiancheggiate da centri massaggi, go-go bar e ristoranti, molti dei quali offrono cibo occidentale - chi diavolo possa voler mangiare un "Sunday roast" in Thailandia va oltre le nostre capacità di immaginazione, ma non importa. E le stesse strade sono piene di turisti, molti dei quali uomini bianchi di mezza età o anziani che camminano mano nella mano con ragazze thailandesi tendenzialmente giovani... sicuramente c'è molto amore in giro. 🤔 🤨 🤢 🤮 Ma a parte questo, di cui per vari motivi non abbiamo fatto foto, troviamo del buon cibo e soprattutto il preferito di Anne, Mango con sticky rice (letteralmente riso appiccicoso) e salsina dolce a base di cocco. 😃🤤🤤

We like wine. We love wine. We plan to head on to South America to have good wine. We would have never expected to have it already in Thailand. 🤯😂

While looking for someplace interesting to visit after Bangkok, Anne stumbles upon the website of a winery located between Hua Hin and the Myanmar border, in central Thailand. It looks interesting, has good reviews and we are hooked.

We get tickets for a minivan to Hua Hin, thinking that it's going to be easier and comfier than the train. It is definitely easier, but Stef's back may strongly disagree with comfier... Anyway, we reach our destination, and that's what matters. 😁

Hua Hin is a coastal town, quite geared to tourism. The streets on the part of town towards the beach are lined with massage parlors, go-to bars and restaurants, many of them offering western food - who the hell might want to have a Sunday roast in Thailand goes beyond our imagination abilities, but whatever. And the same streets are also filled with tourists, many of them middle aged to elderly white men walking hand in hand with mostly young Thai girls... surely there's a lot of love around. 🤔 🤨 🤢 🤮 (We didn't take any photos.) But apart from this, we get some good food and especially Anne's favorite, mango sticky rice. 😃🤤🤤

Letztes Frühstück: Die Frau fand Gefallen an uns und schenkte uns Papaya und ein Stück frittiertes Huhn. // Ultima colazione: la signora ci ha preso in simpatia e ci ha offerto papaya e un pezzo di pollo fritto. // Last breaky: the woman took a liking to us and offered papaya and a piece of fried chicken.

An unserem letzten Abend fragt die Inhaberin des Food Stalls, woher wir kommen, und als sie "Deutschland" hört, beginnt sie Anne von diesem deutschen Mann zu erzählen, "mit dem sie gerade zusammen ist, oder vielleicht auch nicht - ich habe seit einem Monat nichts mehr von ihm gehört." "Vielleicht kommt er im März." Sie hat 25 Jahre in Kanada gelebt, als sie jünger war, mit einem 70-Jährigen, kam dann zurück, hatte eine Affäre mit einem Deutschen... Die Männer scheinen etwas Geld in das Geschäft der Frauen zu "investieren", kaufen ihnen ein Handy, wenn ihres kaputt ist. Sie sagt, viele Ausländer beschwerten sich, Thai-Frauen würden lügen. "Aber sie suchen nur junge, sexy Frauen, kaufen ihnen Drinks in den Bars, wollen keine Frauen, die arbeiten - was erwarten sie denn?" Sie hofft, dass ihr Deutscher wirklich im März kommt, ihr mit dem Restaurant finanziell unter die Arme greift... Was für ein deprimierender Einblick in eine Welt, die so weit von unserer Realität entfernt ist. Liebesbeziehungen scheinen hier ein Luxus zu sein, den sich die Frauen einfach nicht leisten können, und westliche Männer nutzen das aus.

L'ultima sera, la signora del food stall ci chiede da dove veniamo e, dopo aver sentito "Germania", inizia a raccontare ad Anne di questo tipo tedesco con cui "sta attualmente, o forse no - non lo sento da un mese". "Forse arriverà a marzo". Ha passato 25 anni in Canada quando era più giovane con un 70enne, poi è tornata, ha avuto un'altra storia con un tedesco... Sembra che gli uomini "investano" un po' di soldi nelle attività delle donne, comprando loro un cellulare, quando il loro è rotto. Molti stranieri, dice, si lamentano delle donne thailandesi perché mentono. "Ma loro cercano solo donne giovani e sexy, offrono loro da bere nei bar, non vogliono donne che lavorano - cosa si aspettano?". Spera che il suo tedesco venga di nuovo a marzo, la aiuti finanziariamente con il suo ristorante... Che visione deprimente di un mondo così lontano dalla nostra realtà. Le relazioni per amore qui sembrano essere un lusso che le donne non possono permettersi e gli uomini occidentali se ne approfittano.

On our last evening, the lady of the food stall asks where we are from and on hearing "Germany" starts telling Anne about this German guy she "is currently with, or maybe not - I haven't heard from him for a month." "He maybe come in March." She spent 25 years in Canada when she was younger with a 70 year-old, then came back, had another story with a German... The men seem to "invest" some money into the women's business, buy them a mobile phone, when theirs is broken. She says, many foreigners complain about Thai women lying. "But they only look for young, sexy women, buy them drinks at the bars, don't want women who work - what do they expect?" She hopes, her German visits again in March, helps her financially with her restaurant... What a depressing insight into a world, which is so remote from our reality. Love relationships here seem to be a luxury which the women just can't afford and Western men take advantage of that.

Um zum Weingut Monsoon Valley zu gelangen, nutzen wir am Vormittag dessen Shuttle-Service, so sind wir vor allen anderen dort und bekommen eine private Führung durch das Weingut. Es ist interessant zu hören, wie sie mit verschiedenen Rebsorten experimentieren müssen, um diejenigen zu finden, die in diesem Klima am besten gedeihen - Colombard für die Weißweine und Shiraz, Dornfelder und Sangiovese für die Rotweine - und dass sich die eigentliche Weinproduktionsanlage in der Nähe von Bangkok befindet, weil die Region hier geschützt ist und keine großen Gebäude gebaut werden dürfen.

Bei der Verkostung sind wir überrascht, wie gut uns die Weine schmecken, vor allem der 100%-ige Colombard und der Signature Red, ein Cuvée aus Dornfelder, Rondo und Syrah. Wir bestellen auch eine Käseplatte mit lokalem Käse aus Chiang Mai in Nordthailand. Auch sie ist sehr gut, vor allem der Blauschimmelkäse kombiniert mit einem kleinen Glas Dessertwein (ebenfalls 100% Colombard).

Eine tolle Entdeckung und ein unerwartetes Erlebnis für uns in Thailand! Sowie der erste Wein, den wir seit August, also vor fast drei Monaten, getrunken haben (Stefs Sangiovese im Flugzeug von KL nach Bangkok zählt nicht)!

Per raggiungere l'azienda vinicola Monsoon Valley utilizziamo il loro servizio navetta a metà mattina, che ci permette di arrivare prima di tutti gli altri e quindi di fare un tour privato del vigneto. È molto interessante sentire come hanno dovuto e devono sperimentare diverse varietà di uva per trovare quelle che crescono meglio in questo clima - Colombard per i bianchi e Shiraz, Dornfelder e Sangiovese per i rossi - e che l'impianto di vinificazione vero e proprio si trova vicino a Bangkok, perché l'area intorno al vigneto è protetta ed è vietato costruire grandi edifici.

Una volta arrivati alla degustazione, troviamo i vini sorprendentemente buoni, soprattutto il Colombard 100% e il loro Signature Red, una cuvee di Dornfelder, Rondo e Syrah. Prendiamo anche un tagliere di formaggi con formaggi locali provenienti da Chiang Mai, nel nord della Thailandia. Anche questo è molto buono, soprattutto il formaggio erborinato, che accompagnamo con un bicchiere di vino da dessert (anche questo 100% Colombard).

Una bella scoperta e un'esperienza piacevole e inaspettata! E il primo vino che abbiamo bevuto da agosto, quasi tre mesi fa (il Sangiovese di Ste sull'aereo da KL a Bangkok non conta)!

To get to the Monsoon Valley winery we use their shuttle service at mid-morning, which allows us to be there before everyone else and therefore have a private tour of the vineyard. It is quite interesting to hear how they need to experiment with different grape varieties to find those which grow better in this climate - Colombard for the whites and Shiraz, Dornfelder and Sangiovese for the reds - and that the actual wine-making plant is located near Bangkok, because the area around the vineyard is protected and it is forbidden to build big buildings. 

Once we get to the tasting, we find the wines to be surprisingly good, especially the 100% Colombard and their Signature Red, a cuvee of Dornfelder, Rondo and Syrah. We also get a cheese platter with local cheese from Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. It is also very good, especially the blue cheese, which we pair with a small glass of dessert wine (also 100% Colombard). 

A very nice discovery and a pleasant, unexpected experience! And the first wine we had since August, almost three months ago (Stef's Sangiovese on the plane from KL to Bangkok doesn't count)!

Thailand/Thailandia - Bangkok: 11 Jahre später // 11 anni dopo // 11 years later

Das letzte Mal waren wir 2012 während unserer Flitterwochen in Bangkok. Damals waren wir nicht sonderlich positiv beeindruckt. Wahrscheinlich waren wir in den falschen Gegenden, zu nobel für unseren Charakter (und unseren Geldbeutel zu der Zeit 😉). Außerdem mochten wir es nicht - und tun es immer noch nicht - von einem Guide im Rahmen einer vorprogrammierten Tour herumgeführt zu werden, vor allem, wenn wir die einzigen Teilnehmer sind. Wie auch immer, unsere Erinnerungen an die Stadt sind nicht die besten, und so beschließen wir, im Rahmen der Zeit, die wir in Thailand verbringen, der Stadt eine neue Chance zu geben. Und es lohnt sich!

Wie so oft in Städten laufen wir viel herum und versuchen, ein Gefühl für den Ort zu bekommen. Diesmal sind wir in einer anderen Gegend untergekommen, nicht weit vom Fluss Chao Phraya entfernt, der durch Bangkok fließt. Das Viertel ist viel lebenswerter und zu Fuß erkundbar als das andere Viertel vor 11 Jahren; vielleicht hat sich die ganze Stadt in gewissem Maße zum Besseren verändert. "Unser" jetziges Viertel wirkt älter, traditioneller, mit kleinen Häusern, einem Kanal und vielen engen Gassen.

L'ultima volta che siamo stati a Bangkok è stato nel 2012 per la nostra luna di miele. Non eravamo rimasti particolarmente colpiti. Probabilmente ci trovavamo nelle zone sbagliate, troppo eleganti per il nostro carattere (e per le nostre tasche all'epoca 😉). Inoltre, non ci piaceva - e non ci piace tuttora - essere portati in giro da qualche guida all'interno di un tour programmato, soprattutto se siamo gli unici partecipanti... In ogni caso, i nostri ricordi della città non sono dei migliori, così decidiamo, come parte delle due settimane che trascorreremo in Thailandia, di dare alla città un'altra possibilità. Ed è una chance meritata.

Principalmente, come spesso facciamo nelle città, camminiamo parecchio, cercando di farci un'idea del posto. Questa volta ci troviamo in una zona diversa, non lontana dal fiume Chao Phraya, che attraversa Bangkok. È molto più vivibile e percorribile rispetto al quartiere di 11 anni fa e forse l'intera città è cambiata in parte in meglio. Il "nostro" quartiere sembra più antico, più tradizionale, con piccole case, un canale e tanti vicoli stretti.

Last time we were in Bangkok was in 2012 for our honeymoon. We weren't particularly impressed. Probably we were in the wrong areas, too posh for our character (and our pockets at the time 😉). We also didn't - and still don't - like to be brought around by some guide as part of a programmed tour, especially if we are the only participants... Anyway, our memories of the town are not the best, so we decide, as part of the couple of weeks which we are going to spend in Thailand, to give the city another chance. And it's a deserved one. 

Mainly, as we often do in towns, we walk around quite a lot, trying to get a feeling for the place. This time we are in a different area, not far from the river Chao Phraya, which flows through Bangkok. It's much more livable and walkable than the neighbourhood of 11 years ago and maybe the whole city changed to some extent for the better. "Our" quarter seems older, more traditional, with small houses, a channel and loads of narrow alleyways.

Wir essen in verschiedenen lokalen - manchmal auch etwas touristischen - Streetfood Stalls und kleinen Restaurants, sehen uns die Gegend um den Fluss an und besuchen den Wat Suthat-Tempel, der in dem Buch, das Anne gerade liest, eine Rolle spielt. Das Interessanteste an diesem Tempel sind die detailreichen Wandmalereien, die alle Innenwände der Hauptgebetshalle bedecken und wohl Episoden aus den vielen Reinkarnationen Buddhas darstellen.

Mangiamo in diversi posti locali - a volte anche un po' turistici, a dire il vero -, giriamo la zona intorno al fiume e visitiamo il tempio Wat Suthat che figura nel libro che Anne sta leggendo. La caratteristica più interessante di questo tempio sono le pitture che ricoprono tutte le pareti interne della sala di preghiera principale, raffiguranti episodi delle numerose reincarnazioni di Buddha.

We eat in different local - sometimes also a bit touristy, to be honest - places, check out the zone around the river and we visit the Wat Suthat temple which figured in the book Anne is currently reading. The most interesting feature of this temple are the murals covering all of the internal walls of the main prayer hall, depicting episodes from the many reincarnations of Buddha.

Um unsere Weiterreise zu organisieren, gehen wir zum Hauptbahnhof, der eigentlich ziemlich klein und für Bangkok als Hauptstadt des Landes unglaublich leer ist. Bevor wir das Flussboot zurück in unser Viertel nehmen, schlendern wir durch Chinatown, wo wir zu unserer Überraschung viele, viele Restaurants sehen, die mit Haifischflossen werben und diese auf verschiedene Weise zubereitet anbieten, ebenso wie Vogelnester. Natürlich haben wir diese nicht probiert! Wir gehen zurück zu dem kleinen Lokal, in dem wir am Vorabend zu Abend gegessen haben, und essen wieder außergewöhnlich guten gegrillten Schweinenacken mit einer ebenso tollen Dip-Sauce und Morning Glory als Gemüse. 🤤

Per organizzare le nostre tappe successive, ci rechiamo alla stazione principale, che in realtà è piuttosto piccola e incredibilmente vuota per essere quella della capitale della Thailandia. Prima di prendere il battello fluviale per tornare nel nostro quartiere, passeggiamo per Chinatown, dove siamo sorpresi di vedere molti ristoranti che pubblicizzano e offrono pinne di squalo preparate in vari modi, oltre a nidi di uccello. Inutile dire che non proviamo... Torniamo al ristorante dove avevamo cenato la sera prima e mangiamo di nuovo dell'ottimo collo di maiale alla griglia con un'altrettanto ottima salsina in cui pucciarla e morning glory come verdura. 🤤

In order to organize our onward journey, we go to the main station, which is actually pretty small and incredibly empty for Bangkok being the country's capital. Before taking the river boat back to our neighbourhood, we stroll through Chinatown, where we are suprised to see many, many restaurants advertising and offering shark fins prepared in different ways, as well as bird's nests. Needless to say that we don't try them... We go back to the restaurant where we had dinner the night before and have again some exceptionally good grilled pork neck with an equally great dipping sauce and morning glory as vegetable. 🤤

Bangkok gehört zwar immer noch nicht zu unseren Lieblingsstädten, aber dieses Mal fühlen wir uns viel wohler und genießen die Tage viel mehr als 2012. Vielleicht liegt es auch daran, dass wir nicht den Drang haben, alle Sehenswürdigkeiten, die "man gesehen haben muss", sehen zu müssen. Wir genießen es einfach, Straßen und Ecken zu erkunden, indem wir ohne wirkliches Ziel durch die Stadt laufen.

Bangkok non è certo diventata una delle nostre città preferite, ma questa volta ci sentiamo molto più a nostro agio e ci godiamo le giornate molto più che nel 2012. Forse è anche perché non abbiamo l'urgenza di vedere tutte le cose che "bisogna vedere". Ci piace semplicemente scoprire strade e angoli camminando per la città senza un vero obiettivo.

Bangkok still isn't one of our favorite cities, however this time we feel much more comfortable and we actually enjoy the days a lot more than in 2012. Maybe it's also because we don't have the urge to see all the sights, that "one has to see". We simply enjoy checking out roads and corners by walking the city without any real aim.
