Kaudulla National Park - 180 Elefanten // 180 elefanti // 180 elephants

Passt also 😂!

Abbiamo davvero visto 180 elefanti?

Did we really see 180 elephants? Maybe there were "only" 170, or maybe over 200! The fact is, when we booked the safari, we hoped to see at least one pachyderm. So it's ok 😂!

And because we are so impressed by what we saw in Kaudulla National Park, instead of a lot of text, a lot of photos and videos. That tour went far beyond elephants! A really great landscape in dramatic light, as the weather was uncertain, and an incredible variety of other animals besides the actual massive protagonists. Among them: a wide variety of eagles and monkeys, crocodiles, monitor lizards, a chameleon, many many flamingos, ibises, peacocks, hornbills, kingfishers, bee-eaters, parrots, storks, foxes, a mongoose and a huge wasp nest!

We travelled with a great guide in a safari jeep, so with the roof and sides open, and got very close to many animals. On the way home at dusk, we even got within a few metres of more elephants on the side of the road - goosebumps!!!!

Warane - Varano - Monitor Lizard

Adler - Aquila - Eagle

Sigiriya - Das Pizzaexperiment // Un esperimento da "pizzaioli" // The pizza experiment

Disclaimer for Italians and other pizza-know-it-alls: this was a pizza experiment, the oven is handmade in a couple of hours, the ingredients were not from Italy... it was fun and it turned out good, so "sticazzi" or who cares (@Anna: years of study but now we use it right 😅), if it's no "real" pizza like in Naples. 😎😎

Our friend Pete is incredibly full of ideas and projects. For the cabin in Sigiriya he planned to build a barbecue/pizza oven made out of bricks and we are able to help, together with Sumith who takes care of the property and Raja who provides transportation with his tuktuk for the guests of the cabin.

The bricks and two cement slabs had already been provided and it's "just" a matter of flattening the area, setting up the lower layers of bricks, laying down one of the cement slabs, 2 more layers of bricks and topping it all with the second slabs. The fact that the bricks are all more or less of the same size makes things a bit complicated but after a couple of hours we have a test fire roaring in the lower half of the oven and everything is looking good.

At this point Pete and Raja leave for the nearby town of Dambulla and after a couple of hours come back with a full assortment of tools and ingredients: flour, dried yeast, tomato sauce, bell peppers, onion, garlic, sausages, instant coffee (not pizza related but necessary for my survival 😅). And a couple of round oven trays to bake the pizza on - basically to make a kind of "pizza al padellino" - and a sort of shallow metal pan that is normally used to prepare local flat breads but which Sumith fitted with a long bamboo handle (spontaneously cut in the backyard, of course - typical local no-frills and very effective solution development) turning it into a very good pizza shovel (or whatever it is called).

Now it's Anne's turn to make a quick dough with ingredients she's unused to and in less time than normal. Full success, as I predicted: after about 2 hrs the dough has grown enough to make four pizzas, which we prepare on the trays in shifts, as only one tray at a time can fit in the oven. As for toppings, our "Sigiriya special" is definitely rich: we  put on everything we have, including some cherry tomatoes and chilies from Pete's farm and top it off with a bit of coconut oil. Unheard of, I grant you, but the final result is really quite good.

And also perfectly baked with the right amount of crunch! The first pizza takes a bit longer than expected, probably because the temperature was still too low. The following two go much faster and with the remaining piece of dough we decide to make a simple bread to eat in the morning.

We eat our pizza in a very non-Italian way with some nice Australian Shiraz which goes down well, also because by now it's after 9 pm and the temperature has gone down enough that also a red wine can be enjoyed.

Another cool day, full of fun, creativity and satisfaction 🍕😁😎

DANKE, PETE!!!

THANK YOU, PETE!!! You've made our start in Sri Lanka and of this long journey already truly memorable! It was great spending the last days with you and we loved every little thing about it! Thank you for your generosity, the good talks and good laugh!

Sigiriya - Ein Häuschen im Grünen // Una capanna nel verde // A cabin in the green

A small wooden house in the middle of the green. If you don't know the way there, you won't find it - not even if you stand on the narrow dirt road of sand and reddish earth directly in front of the entrance gate. Because then you still need to walk a few metres further through to the back until you discover it between the branches. We have the enormous luck, thanks to Pete, to be able to spend just under a week there!

He has named his cabin "Serenity". It is located directly in one of the most touristy places in Sri Lanka, in Sigiriya, and is therefore right in the middle, yet far away from it all, completely immersed in nature. And we see, hear and feel this nature very closely: various species of birds and other animals sit in the trees, run through the thicket and call from all corners, including peacocks, palm squirrels, hornbills, lizards, etc. We have to keep our food safe from ants, spiders, geckos and insects of all shapes and colours in closed containers, as is so often the case in the tropics.

For city dwellers like us, this is also a small adventure, but one that does us a world of good and, above all, we enjoy a lot! As soon as it gets dark, we switch on six spotlights and lamps around the cabin, to keep elephants away; after sunset there is also only one means of transport and that is by tuktuk, and preferably only until 9:30 pm. So after dinner we don't stay out in bars, but simply return to our little home. That's where we spend most of our time anyways, especially because we can sit outside on a terrace covered with coconut palm leaves - and it's from here actually that we write this text, too.

From the garden we also enjoy an exclusive view of Lion Rock in the distance - the tourist attraction par excellence here and rightly so a UNESCO World Heritage Site! Of course, on one of the afternoons we also climbed the 1.200 very windy steps to the old royal palace on top and took in the indescribably great view. We tried to spot "our" cabin from up there, but failed - it is well hidden in the greenery ;-)

Less than five minutes from the cabin is a beautiful lake with water lilies, cormorants, other water birds and eagles circling in the sky above, as well as a picturesque view of the three mountains behind. Half the neighbourhood also goes swimming, sometimes washing clothes and brushing teeth here. Of course, we also came here to cool off and let the small fish nibble at us ;-)
