Sri Lanka - Pelikane und Verkehr // Pellicani e traffico // Pelicans and traffic

Die bisher schnellste Einreisekontrolle an einem Flughafen! Fast keine Warteschlange, ein paar Fragen und fünf Minuten später sind wir fertig und auf dem Weg zum Gepäckband. Dann: Sri Lanka Rupees vom Geldautomaten holen - check! SIM-Karten für unsere Handys kaufen - check! Mit Uber eine Mitfahrgelegenheit in die Stadt buchen - check! Nachdem wir um 15 Uhr gelandet sind, treffen wir uns bereits um 18 Uhr mit unserem Freund Pete in seiner Wohnung mitten in der Stadt und genießen von seiner Dachterrasse und Wohnung, mit einer Tasse Tee in der Hand, einen grandiosen Blick über die Häuser, die Eisenbahnlinie entlang des Ozeans nach Galle und das Meer selbst - während die untergehende Sonne alles in Pastellfarben taucht. Willkommen in Sri Lanka! 😀

L'immigrazione più veloce che abbiamo avuto fino ad oggi! Quasi nessuna coda, poche domande e nel giro di cinque minuti abbiamo finito e siamo andati a ritirare i bagagli. Poi: soldi dal bancomat - fatto! SIM per i telefoni - fatto! Uber per arrivare in cittá - prenotato! Dopo essere atterrati alle 15:00, già alle 18:00 incontriamo il nostro amico Pete nel suo appartamento e godiamo di una splendida vista sulla città, sulla linea ferroviaria che costeggia l'oceano fino a Galle e sul mare stesso dalla sua terrazza sul tetto e dalle finestre, bevendo un tè mentre il sole al tramonto immerge tutto in colori pastello. Benvenuti in Sri Lanka! 😀

The fastest immigration process at an airport so far! Nearly no queue, a few questions and five minutes later we're done and on our way the luggage belt. Next: money from ATM - check! SIM-cards for our mobiles - check! Book a lift to town with Uber - check! Having landed at 3 PM, we're meeting our friend Pete in his flat already at 6 PM and take in a grand view across the town, the railway line down south along the ocean to Galle and the ocean itself from his rooftop terrace and flat - while sipping a cup of tea and while the sunset starts turning everything into pastel colours. Welcome to Sri Lanka! 😀

Auf dem Weg vom Flughafen sehen wir schon so viel: Pelikane auf Straßenlaternen, eine arten- und zahlreiche Vogelwelt, Kokospalmen überall, eine extrem grüne Landschaft mit Dschungel und tropischen Wäldern, Flughunde und Pfaue (Sri Lankas Nationalvogel). Das haben wir nicht erwartet!

Und während wir diese ersten Eindrücke bequem vom Beifahrer- und Rücksitz des Autos aus aufnehmen, sind wir erleichtert, dass wir uns nicht für ein Mietauto entschieden haben und nicht selbst fahren. Der Verkehr nach und in Colombo ist verrückt (und überall sonst in Sri Lanka auch)! Um ihn erfolgreich (d. h. ohne Schaden für das Auto und andere) zu bewältigen, muss man sich definitiv mit waghalsigen Manövern auskennen, alle Regeln vergessen, die man einmal gelernt hat, und auf Hunde, Menschen, Affen, auf der Straße zum Trocknen ausgebreiteten Reis (in ländlichen Gebieten), Kamikaze-Busse - und nachts möglicherweise auch Elefanten - achten.

Der Uber-Fahrer, der uns nach Colombo bringt, hat ein Miniauto: einen Tata Nano Gold. Ein großes Lob an ihn, dass er uns und unsere Rucksäcke darin problemlos untergebracht hat. Lustig, seine Autodekoration zu sehen: 10 ausgestopfte, bunte Stoffwürfel, eine Whiskeyflasche, verschiedene Figuren, eine riesige Weintraube aus Plastik und andere Dinge füllen die Frontscheibe und das Armaturenbrett komplett aus.

Durante il tragitto dall'aeroporto vediamo già molto: Pellicani sui lampioni, uccelli vari, palme da cocco ovunque, un paesaggio verdissimo con giungle e foreste tropicali, volpi volanti e pavoni (l'uccello nazionale dello Sri Lanka). Non ce lo aspettavamo!

E mentre ci godiamo queste prime impressioni comodamente dal sedile del passeggero e da quello posteriore dell'auto, siamo sollevati dal fatto di non aver optato per un'auto a noleggio e di non dover guidare. Il traffico per e in Colombo è pazzesco (e anche in tutto il resto dello Sri Lanka)! Per affrontarlo con successo (cioè senza danneggiare l'auto e gli altri), bisogna essere a proprio agio con manovre spericolate, dimenticare tutte le regole che si sono imparate e fare attenzione a cani, persone, scimmie, riso messo a seccare sulla strada (nelle zone rurali), autobus kamikaze - e potenzialmente anche elefanti di notte.

L'autista di Uber che ci ha portato a Colombo ha una microcar: una Tata Nano Gold. Complimenti a lui per averci fatto entrare noi e i nostri zaini. La cosa divertente è stata vedere le decorazioni che aveva messo nella sua auto.... 10 dadi di peluche, una bottiglia di whisky, varie statuette, un enorme grappolo d'uva di plastica e altre cose riempivano completamente il parabrezza e il cruscotto.

We see so much on the way from the airport already: pelicans on street lamps, abundant bird life in general, coconut palms all over, an extreme lush green countryside of jungles/tropical forests, flying foxes and peacocks (Sri Lanka's national bird). We didn't expect that!

And while we take in these first impressions comfortably from the car's passenger and back seats, we are relieved to not have opted for renting a car and not needing to drive. Traffic towards and in Colombo is crazy (and anywhere else in Sri Lanka, too)! To navigate it successfully (i.e. without any harm to the car and anybody else), you definitely need to be familiar with daring manoeuvres, forget any rules you once learnt and watch out for dogs, people, monkeys, rice being spread out on the road to dry (in rural areas), kamikaze buses - and potentially also elephants at night.

The Uber driver who takes us to Colombo has a microcar: a Tata Nano Gold. Kudos to him for making us and our backpacks fit. Very funny to check out the decorations he put in his car... 10 colourful stuffed dices, a whiskey bottle, various figurines, a huge grape made out of plastic and some other stuff fill the front window and dashboard completely.

Zum Abendessen lädt uns Pete - den wir das letzte Mal vor 11 Jahren bei unserer Hochzeit gesehen haben - in ein südindisches Restaurant ein, wo wir Pläne für den nächsten Tag schmieden. Das Ergebnis? Unser Wecker wird um 4:30 Uhr klingeln, damit wir per Auto (Pete wird fahren - siehe oben 😉) um die Mittagszeit in Anuradhapura sind.

Per cena, Pete - che avevamo visto l'ultima volta 11 anni fa al nostro matrimonio - ci invita in un ristorante con cucina tipica dell'India meridionale, dove facciamo progetti per il giorno successivo. Il risultato? La sveglia suonerà alle 4:30 del mattino, in modo da essere ad Anuradhapura in auto (guida Pete - vedi sopra 😉) per l'ora di pranzo.

For dinner, Pete - who we've seen last time 11 years ago at our marriage - invites us to a South-Indian restaurant, where we make plans for the next day. Result? Our alarm is going to ring at 4:30 AM, so we can get by car (Pete is going to drive - see above 😉) to Anuradhapura around lunch time.
